Learn how I can support your publishing journey.

A book is never just a collection of words

It is structure.
It is rhythm.

It is the careful placement of chapters, illustrations, poems, openings, endings, personal thoughts, glossaries,
and quiet pauses.

A book carries a voice. Sometimes it carries a life story. Sometimes it carries knowledge, comfort, memory, or hope. And when a manuscript is shaped with care, it can become something that truly reaches its readers.

KML Publishing is the book and publishing branch of Kathrin’s Medical Linguistics. It offers publishing support and selected independent book projects for authors who want to turn a meaningful manuscript into a
carefully created book.

I support authors with life stories, memoirs, health-related books, personal reflections, educational books, and other meaningful projects that deserve professional language care, thoughtful structure, and a clear path towards publication.

From manuscript to book

Many authors start with a manuscript, but not yet with a book.

There may be chapters, memories, poems, diary entries, family stories, images, notes, translated sections, or personal reflections.
The material is there — but it still needs form.

This is where I can help.

I support authors in shaping their manuscript into a book that feels coherent, readable, visually balanced, and ready for publication. Depending on your needs, I can guide the full process or support selected parts of it.

Some authors need help from the very beginning.
Others already have a strong manuscript and only need editing, layout support, a cover, ISBN guidance,
or help with publishing.

KML Publishing can meet you where you are.

What I can help you with

Every book project is different. That is why my support can be tailored to your manuscript, your goals, and the stage you are currently in.

My publishing support may include:

Manuscript shaping and editing

I help you turn your text into a clear, readable, well-structured book while preserving your voice and intention.

Book structure and content flow

I support the organisation of chapters, sections, poems, illustrations, personal reflections, glossaries, openings, closings, and additional material so the book feels complete and easy to follow.

Language polishing

I improve clarity, flow, consistency, tone, and readability, while making sure the text still sounds like you.

Reader-friendly communication

I help make complex, emotional, or sensitive content accessible to readers without flattening its meaning.

Cover creation

I can support the visual direction of your book and create a cover that fits the tone, message, and audience of your project.

ISBN and publishing support

I offer ISBN support and can help prepare your book for publication.

Publishing support on Amazon, IngramSpark & Co.

For selected projects, I can support publication via my own Amazon and IngramSpark account, depending on the project, agreement, and publishing route.

Alternatively, I can show you how to do it yourself.

Full or partial project support

You can choose an all-in publishing support package or ask for help with specific parts of the process.

Who KML Publishing is for

KML Publishing may be a good fit if you are writing or preparing:

  •  a memoir or life story
  •  a personal or family story
  •  a health-related book
  •  a patient or caregiver story
  •  an educational book for a wider audience
  •  a reflective book with poems, images, or personal thoughts
  •  a translated or partly translated manuscript
  •  a meaningful book that needs structure, editing, design, and publication support

This is not the right place for highly technical manuals or purely academic publications. My focus is on books with a human core — books that carry meaning, experience, knowledge, care, or personal truth.

KML – Publishing

My approach

I believe books need care.

Not only correction.
Not only formatting.
Not only a cover.

A meaningful book needs someone to look at the whole reading experience:

Where does the story begin?
Where does the reader need a pause?
Where would an image speak louder than another paragraph?
Where does a glossary help?
Where does the author’s voice need protection?
Where does the structure need more clarity?

My work is careful, collaborative, and reader-focused. I bring together editing, language, structure, medical and health communication experience, visual thinking, and publishing support.

The aim is not to take over your book.
The aim is to help your book become what it is meant to be.

Why work with KML Publishing?

KML Publishing combines professional language work with a deep understanding of sensitive stories.

As a nurse turned medical communicator, translator, author, and editor, I know how much words matter — especially when they are connected to illness, memory, care, identity, grief, resilience, or hope.

I also know that many authors do not only need someone to “fix the text.” They need someone who can see the whole book.

That includes:

  •  the structure
  •  the tone
  •  the reader journey
  •  the emotional balance
  •  the visual elements
  •  the publishing route
  •  the practical next steps

With KML Publishing, you receive support that is professional, honest, and human.

Flexible publishing support

You can work with me in different ways:

All-in publishing support

For authors who want guidance from manuscript stage to publication-ready book.  This may include editing, structure, cover creation, ISBN support, publishing preparation, Amazon upload support, book description, and metadata.

Partial publishing support

For authors who only need help with selected steps, such as editing, cover creation, formatting advice, ISBN support, or Amazon publishing support.

Manuscript review

For authors who want to understand what their book needs before committing to a larger project. This can be a helpful first step if you are unsure whether your manuscript needs editing, restructuring, polishing, or publishing preparation.

A note on sensitive and personal stories

Some books carry difficult material.

They may include illness, loss, family history, trauma, grief, recovery, or deeply personal memories. I approach these projects with care, respect, and professional boundaries.

My goal is to help shape the book without taking away its truth.

A sensitive story does not need to be made less honest.
But it may need structure, clarity, and balance so readers can stay with it.

Words from Mervi Swan

"I so appreciate your walking with me on my journey of publishing of my first translation of a book!
It would not have happened without you.

It is not a publication; it is a creation, a labour of love.

Your creative thinking, emotional attention to detail, patience and inspiration have been the guiding spirit that kept me going. Our frequent emails, your professional advice on the layout and your inspiration kept me going, thank you.

You don't give up, you look at the bright side, you won!

You gave me the opportunity of being part of the journey of publishing Kaisu's and Iiris's book.
Your co-operation has been invaluable."

Case Study: Bringing Through Small Eyes – A Child’s Cancer Journey into English

From translated manuscript to publication-ready book

Some book projects are more than publishing projects. They carry memories, family history, medical experiences, grief, love, and the wish to make an important story accessible to more readers.

Through Small Eyes – A Child’s Cancer Journey is one of those books.

This project began through connection. Through the ITI MedNet network, Rob Williams brought Mervi and me together. That first connection opened the door to a publishing journey that became much more than a technical book project.

The original Finnish book tells the deeply personal story of Kaisu and her daughter Iiris, who lived with a rare and aggressive cancer. The English version was translated by Mervi Swaan, who wanted to bring this moving story to an international readership.

Mervi had already done the heart of the work: she had translated the manuscript. But turning a translated Word document into a carefully prepared, professional English book required another layer of support.

This is where KML Publishing came in.

The starting point

When I first became involved in the project, the English manuscript existed as a basic Word document. The translation was there, the story was there, and the emotional power of the book was already clear.

But a book needs more than text to become ready for publication.

The project required careful decisions around structure, layout, images, captions, formatting, metadata, publication platforms, and the overall presentation of the English edition.

There were also sensitive details to consider: family photographs, poems, medical wording, place names, historical context, credits, permissions, and the respectful handling of a child’s illness story.

Together with Mervi and Kaisu, we also brought more personal material into the book. This included additional poems, illustrations, and visual elements that helped deepen the emotional and personal character of the English edition. This part of the project was initiated by my wish to give the book even more of its original heart and family voice.

This was not a project for quick formatting.
It needed patience, accuracy, and care.

The challenge

The main challenge was to turn a translated manuscript into a polished English paperback while preserving the personal voice and emotional integrity of the original story.

The book included diary-style passages, reflections, poems, images, captions, and contextual information. It also involved medical content, personal memories, and sensitive family history.

This meant the work had to balance several needs at once:

  • keeping the text readable and natural in English
  • respecting the author’s voice and the translator’s work
  • preparing the manuscript for print publication
  • editing, preparing, and implementing more than 60 pictures
  • placing images and captions carefully
  • checking consistency across the book
  • making decisions together about the best publishing route
  • making the book look professional without making it feel impersonal

The goal was not to turn the book into something overly polished or distant. The goal was to help the story stand clearly and respectfully on its own.

What KML Publishing did

KML Publishing supported the English edition from manuscript preparation through to publication setup.

This included:

  • reviewing the structure of the manuscript
  • supporting title development for the English edition
  • preparing the Word manuscript for book layout
  • formatting the interior for paperback publication
  • editing, placing, and implementing over 60 photographs and images
  • creating and refining a map for the book
  • working with Mervi and Kaisu to include additional poems, illustrations, and personal material
  • including an illustration created by my daughter Leah for the opening page of the book
  • checking consistency in headings, spacing, page layout, and image placement
  • supporting decisions around credits and permissions
  • helping with publication metadata
  • making publishing decisions together, including how and where to publish the English edition
  • providing the book’s own ISBN
  • publishing the book through my KML Publishing Amazon account
  • preparing the publication through my IngramSpark account
  • cover creation and final file checks
  • guiding the process step by step

The project also included many small but important decisions that are easy to overlook in book publishing: image quality, caption placement, page breaks, chapter flow, punctuation consistency, typography, file conversion issues, and upload requirements.

Each of these details affects how a reader experiences the final book.

A sensitive medical story needs careful language

Because the book deals with childhood cancer, illness, treatment, hospital life, and grief, the language needed to be handled with particular care.

My background as a nurse and medical communicator was helpful here. I could support the project not only from a publishing perspective, but also with an understanding of medical language, patient experience, and emotionally sensitive communication.

Medical stories are never just about facts. They are about people.

In this project, it was important that the language remained clear, respectful, and accessible without losing the emotional depth of the original story.

The result

The result is a carefully prepared English edition of

Through Small Eyes – A Child’s Cancer Journey.

The book is now published as a paperback, with the manuscript, layout, images, captions, map, and metadata.

The English edition is published under KML Publishing, using its own ISBN provided through my publishing setup. The book runs through my KML Publishing Amazon account and will soon be published via my IngramSpark account.

What began as a translated manuscript became a complete book project: structured, formatted, checked, enriched with personal material, and prepared for readers.

Most importantly, the English edition now allows this deeply personal Finnish story to reach people beyond its original language.

What this project shows

This project reflects what KML Publishing is about.

It is not only about “making a book file”. It is about helping meaningful books become readable, professional, and accessible.

Many authors, translators, and families have a manuscript, a story, or a personal project they would love to publish, but the technical and practical steps can feel overwhelming.

Book publishing involves many moving parts: editing, formatting, layout, cover files, metadata, ISBNs, print requirements, platform settings, proof copies, corrections, and final uploads.

KML Publishing helps guide that process with care.

Especially for medical stories, memoirs, patient stories, family histories, and personal non-fiction, the publishing process needs both technical precision and human sensitivity.

Through Small Eyes – A Child’s Cancer Journey is a beautiful example of that.
